How installing Solar can benefit you
Is Battery storage worth the extra cost?
Solar i-boost, what does it do?

Solar panels generate the most energy during the day, while most households tend to use most of their electricity in the evening. If there is insufficient load in the house, excess generation from the array will be exported to the grid. This is where an add on like a solar PV or immersion optimiser, such as the iBoost, comes in.

The iBoost monitors electricity export using a sensor attached between your main meter and consumer unit. If the sensor detects that the property is exporting electricity, the device diverts the excess power to the immersion heater in the hot water tank. This reduces the fuel required by the boiler, thereby cutting fuel costs.

What is a Solar PV export tariff?

When your solar panels generate electricity, this has to be used on site at that moment or sent to the grid – unless your system is off-grid or you have battery storage to retain power on site for later use. But what happens to the excess electricity you send to the grid? That’s where an export tariff comes in – it’s the rate at which you’re reimbursed for every unit of generated electricity you sell to the National Grid.

What is Smart Export Guarantee?

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) has now been in effect for over a year, since it came into law on January 1st 2020. It’s the mechanism to ensure solar PV owners are paid for the power they send to the grid, ending the policy void that existed since the Feed-in Tariff closed to new applicants in March 2019.

According to the SEG, energy suppliers with over 150,000 customers must offer an export tariff with a rate greater than zero. The SEG is available for customers with an MCS-certified renewable energy system under 5MW and a second generation smart meter.

With zero as the minimum, at the very least you can’t be charged for being relieved of excess solar power. However, suppliers don’t have to give you very much for it. So how much are they offering in practice?
